When I was little, I wanted to own an ice-cream shop. I thought that this would be my ideal occupation because I don't like ice-cream and therefore wouldn't eat through all of my profits.
I now believe that I have the ideal job (for me), I love what I do, my work does not pay well and when it does the money comes in one go and therefore has to be set aside so it can last. This is ok because apart from the travel bug I catch at times, I don't live and extravagant lifestyle.
I never planned to be an artist. I always thought that I'd either continue with my music or end up a journalist like my parents.
In year 10 we had to complete a multiple choice test to see what would be a suitable position to work towards (and therefore choose the appropriate subjects for years 11 and 12) after this test we were sent to a relevant firm depending on the outcome. I ended up at a Mortuary. I have no idea what answers led me there and although I thought it was funny at the time, this left me even more confused as what to do with my life. My High School obviously wasn't the only one who chose this strange method of career planning, a friend I met in University was told that he should become a Mime or Puppeteer.
Well I decided to choose subjects that I would enjoy, and see what happened after that. Luckily none of the University courses I eventually applied for had any pre-requisites (apart from English) The subjects I chose were;
*English
*Literature
*Music craft
*Psychology
*Studio Art
*Photography
*Theatre Studies
The problem with these subjects was that the Education system at the time had a strange (and unfair) scoring system (which inevitably narrowed or widened your choices for Universities and Courses) For example a student studying Physics who go a C- would score that same as a Studio Art student who got an A+. This being said, I ended up with a Tertiary Entry score of 39 out of a possible 100, even though I generally good marks.
I still didn't know what to do with my life so I chose a range of University majors and left the decision in the lap of the Gods. I ended up studying Fine Art at Monash University. Which led me to where I am today. I wonder who I'd be if I'd gotten into Theatre or whatever.
Even though we both have relatively interesting occupations, my friend Dave (who's a cartoonist/Animator) and I often lie about what we do when we go to parties together. I don't know why we do this. Dave is usually a "Taxidermist" and I am either an "Abalone Poacher" or a "Professional Gambler". I guess it's fun to see how long we can keep the act going before we get caught or own up (Maybe I should have been a politician).
What did you want to be when you where a child?
What do you do now (or if still in school what do you want/plan to do)?
