I FOUND $10,000 TODAY!!!
Well, I found the money on the floor at work. . . in an envelope.
I handed it in to the front office manager at work who logged it and put it in the safe to see if anyone asked for it.
About half an hour later I received a phone call from a distressed woman who had stayed at our hotel and lost a "considerable amount" of money. I told her that I had it in the safe and that if she came back to the hotel, she could fill out some paperwork and pick it up.
When she got there, I asked my Duty Manager (who has keys to the safe) to get the money for Mrs. Money
Mrs. Money looked in the envelope and asked who found it. My manager told her that I had and MM said thank you and handed me $100 for my honesty. My Duty manager lent over and took $50 for herself and said thank-you to her. Mrs. Money looked at me and then the manager pulled an odd expression but didn’t say anything then left.
I thought my managers reaction was strange because this wasn’t a Tip and even if it was, The person who gets the tip is the one who decides whether the guest wanted it to be for just themselves or to be shared amongst the staff. I didn’t think much more of it because $50 is a wonderful bonus anyway and I didn’t feel it was appropriate to challenge her decision.
Just as I was signing out the manager came up to me and asked me to hand over $10. When I asked
“Why?”
she said she wanted to give $10 to housekeeping. Again I asked
“Why?”
She explained that if I hadn’t found it housekeeping probably would have so they should at least have $10. . .WTF!
I handed her $5 and said that she could make the rest up out of her $50. As I handed it over I said
“House-keeping didn’t find it. . .I did”
She said that she felt bad asking, I smiled and told her it wasn’t a problem at all but that we should share it. She seemed happy with that.
Again as I said $45 is wonderful and I really wasn’t expecting any kind of reward. I’m a little shocked only because anybody could have found the money. . .Another guest, house-keeping, maintenance, who knows and who could say whether they’d hand it in or not.
Am I right in thinking that this was not a tip but a reward?
Should I be feeling a little cheated?
Little Blue
I’m not really fussed about the money, why do I feel this way?
