The Pie is one of Australia's national foods (yes I know we didn't invent them, please refer to my post from May 26, 2004 -Laugh and say that "this is Australia"- In it I explain how we adopt anything even vaguely associated with this country), don't expect fruit though, if you want Apple Pie, say that because if you order "a pie" (b.t.w pies are not sold by the slice here) you will get the usual pastry case filled with sloppy minced beef (well that's what they say it is), gravy and covered in Sauce (sometimes the sauce will be injected into the pie itself). If you see "Pie float" (not common anymore) on a menu, your pie will come covered in Mushy peas.
A snag is a sausage, we don't barbeque ribs here like in the U.S, An Aussie B.B.Q (Barbie) consists of burnt Snags and Charcoal steak. Sometimes there's lettuce, (sadly many Australians still haven't discovered dressing) and Square bread. No body "chucks another Shrimp on the barbie" We don't even call them Shrimp. They are Prawns.
A 'Sausage Sizzle" is a B.B.Q for a large group of people. This meal consists of burnt snags covered in sauce in square bread (sometimes there are grilled onions) Vegetarians are expected to eat bread with Sauce at these events.
Sauce makes the meal in Australia.
A sausage roll, is Sausage meat wrapped in Pastry. A Sausage roll in a roll, is sausage meat wrapped in pastry in a bread roll (with the mandatory sauce)
Tim-Tams are triple choc. biscuits. If you ever want to win an Australian woman's heart boys (especially an ex-pat who hasn't had them in a while) Get your hands on a packet of Tim-Tams.
A Tim-Tam slam is when you bite the ends off your bickie and suck hot coffee or tea (a cuppa) through the centre and quickly slam the whole sweet, soggy, mushy, mess into your mouth before it falls into your cuppa. Tim-tams are not eaten with Sauce.

For some reason if the menu item is pre-fixed with the word "Aussie" ( eg; Aussie-burger, Aussie Pizza) expect it to include Fried Egg or Beetroot or both. Most Australians remove the beetroot (I like it). B.T.W A pizza is not a pie.
